Hijikata was raised by his brother and sister-in-law, since his father died before he was born. He was considered a troublesome person, and not liked much by his family, so to get out of trouble’s way he decided to travel and sell the medicine his mother and father made. However, he wished to be a soldier and enjoyed wielding a sword. Wanting to avoid getting in the way of his brother by staying around he decided to travel Dojo to dojo practicing his swordsmanship. He finally ended up at the Tennen Rishin Ryu dojo where he met Kondo and Souji. Soon the Roshigumi was formed, it later became the Shinsengumi.
The Shinsengumi is a special police force organized by the Bakufu to protect the Shogunate representatives in Kyoto and fought against the Reformists. Hijikata became the Vice-Captain of this group, and the right hand man of Kondo.
In the first year of the Genji era Hijikata, Kondo, and the rest of the Shinsengumi came all the way to Kyoto to protect the peace that the emperor created. The Ikedaya Affair, when the soldiers of the Sonno Faction planned to set fire to the Imperial Palace, was when the Shinsengumi name became truly known. Caught up in the chaos of the battle was when the Protagonist was found (by Saitou). Upon finding out her parents were killed amidst the battle she was taken into the Shinsengumi headquarters to be a maid (Hijikata first didn’t approve, until Kondo gave the final word).
Two years after the Ikedaya Affair, the Shinsengumi became widely known. However, to most outsiders they were seen as assassins, and murderers. Many people hated the Shinsengumi for this bad reputation, however Hijikata still clung to the Shinsengumi’s will no matter what. Since the number of soldiers increased the Shinsengumi headquarters moved to Nishi Honganji (A temple in Kyoto) and this is also where Hijikata proclaimed that the protagonist and he are lovers.
When the Yoshinobu-kou returned power to the Imperial Court the Satsuma and Choshu clans weren’t satisfied. The Kodaiji faction injured Kondo in an attempt to assassinate him. Due to this development the Shinsengumi decided to move south of Kyoto in preparation to blockade upper Kyoto. Since Kondo was injured and unable to move, Hijikata took it upon himself to take charge of this blockade since he realized he is the only one who was capable.
Hijikata ended up becoming the general of the Kando army who were responsible for the Goryokaku. Soon Ezochi was invaded and there was an attack on Hakodate. Like a true soldier, who is always ready for death, Hijikata writes a final letter to the Protagonist. When the battle began, Hijikata went head first into battle prepared for the worst to happen. However, his horse gets shot and he fell off the horse.
In the midst of the battle he couldn’t move, his body hurt all over, and all he could do was close his eyes with only death in his thoughts.
His letter did make it back to the Protagonist though, where he finally admits his love for her.
◎ Is the character a hacker and/or do they have a sixth-sense? Nope!
◎ Personality:
Hijikata is the strong and ruthless force that is the backbone of the Shinsengumi. With his nickname, the “Demon Vice-Commander”, he strikes fear into the hearts of practically anyone— even his own troops. They don’t dare to confront Hijikata unless they have a very good reason. No one dares to even mess up once in his presence, because of his reputation of being strict. The harsh punishments that he delivers as a result of misconduct is what earned him the nickname of Demon in the first place. Hijikata believes being strict is very necessary since Kondo is a very open-minded man, thus Hijikata felt the need to become an opposite existence that is feared; this makes Kondo seem even more wonderful. It’s all because he wants people to see how great Kondo is, and also the Shinsengumi in general. It’s a chivalrous act, becoming hated for a cause, which shows his devotion to the Shinsengumi which is practically unmatched compared to anyone in the organization.
Hijikata’s dedication and love for the Shinsengumi is deeply rooted. Because his family by blood didn’t love him and thought he was a troublesome nuisance, it ingrained a complex that he wasn’t someone necessary. As a result he was always alone and continuously distanced himself from his family so that he wouldn’t have to deal with them constantly looking down on him, since as one of the youngest in the family line, he wouldn’t be able to become anything that mattered. However, when he came across Kondo and Souji they accepted Hijikata like he was a brother; that’s when they became like a family that cannot be replaced. Forming the Shinsengumi with both of them by Hijikata’s side gave him an irreplaceable happiness, and a real home. For this reason, if there’s one thing he can do he wants to protect the Shinsengumi with his life, because without the Shinsengumi Hijikata believes he would have been nothing.
With this never ending dedication, duty comes out to be Hijikata’s number one priority. As a vice-captain his duty is to also harden his heart, which he decided to do a long time ago so that he could uphold the rules and regulations with much respect. “It’s unforgivable for someone to leave, whether they’re a vice commander or an ordinary soldier. We can’t ignore someone who has broken the rules.” With that said, he wouldn’t even waver when it’s someone he truly loves: with a hardened heart he’s able to kill the ones he loves for the Shinsengumi. At this cost of hardening his heart he became the ruthless, cold demon everyone knows. While he says because of this that he’s alone, he also admits that he doesn’t particularly feel lonely since it’s for the Shinsengumi. Yet, deep down, it’s all connected to a fragile fear: that everything he loves will disappear from his sight.
Hijikata has put so much love into the Shinsengumi that he’s deeply afraid that in one swoop he could lose it, and it’s constantly biting him in the back of his mind. “If everything disappears from my sight… If that time comes, I’ll have nothing left.” While Hijikata says he’s fine being alone, it’s because all the people he loves are around him, they’re alive and breathing and if he stays strong and protect the Shinsengumi, they will be okay. The Shinsengumi is his foundation, and his support. If those people were to actually disappear he knows he will truly be alone, and he won’t know where to go for support. This may be why he has an affinity for collars. It’s a metaphor, if he ties someone up to a post they would never leave him. Though, the real fear lies in the question: “What will happen if I undo these ties?”
Possessing a strong sense of loyalty, he’s a man that’s rarely shaken when it’s come to his decisions. Once he makes a decision he sticks to it like glue. With loyalty also comes bravery, because he never deviates from the morals that allowed him to grow up to be a strong samurai who is not even afraid of death, or dying on the battlefield if it’s for his troops. However, if there’s one thing he cannot stand, it is lies; he values sincerity. While he may be furious at misunderstandings, especially if something grave happens, he can always forgive honesty at the least. While he may be strict, he is capable of understanding and even forgiving.
Overall, because of his duties Hijikata is always hiding behind a mask that no one has ever taken off. Just because he hardened for his heart doesn’t mean that the “real” Hijikata is locked up forever. While he may still confiscate sweets from Kondo because he doesn’t want him to be a bad role model for the troops, he was even caught eating sweets one day himself; utterly embarrassed, Hijikata tries to reinforce that he’s a serious man (even though he was quite flustered) and him eating something like sweets is strange. This goes to show while Hijikata may be called a demon, he has a human side, and also weak spots. However, he also doesn’t like his reputation of being such a scary man shattered just because he was caught doing something silly.
He actually works really hard to keep the relationships he cares about. This is why he’s so caring to the Protagonist and the other Shinsengumi members. Hijikata shows a fondness to Souji just because he’s like a little brother to Hijikata. He often berates hSouji when he's not taking care of himself out of the concern an older brother would have for his younger one. With Kondo he’s always making sure he’s safe, but also being the man that’s supposed to be in charge of the Shinsengumi: it’s tough love in a sense, even when he was younger his lectures towards Kondo never stopped but that’s because he kept trying to steer Kondo in the right direction. With the rest of the captains they’re usually together and they partake in drinks, laughing and having a good time. Even Hijikata is able to take time out of his day to just relax with the troops he cares about.
Considering the Protagonist, she left a great impact on Hijikata. She actually opened the heart that Hijikata closed long ago. When he accidentally hurt the Protagonist out of a fit of anger he immediately took the responsibility to own up on his own actions and apologize. He takes a careful concern to make sure she wasn’t hurt and was properly bandaged. He goes out of his way with considerate actions and own up to his mistakes. This also shows that he's capable of being hospitable, which may be a result of his medical history, but even with a gentle edge to his actions he’s able to be awfully kind. During hard times she has always been next to Hijikata and he cannot be more thankful for that.
Hijikata has always been extensively critical on himself, exploding into rage or crying fits when he isn’t the responsible leader that protects his troops. With the blood of his own troops on his hands, he couldn’t forgive himself because it was ultimately his fault that they died, since he’s the captain that was supposed to protect them. Yet, the Protagonist continued to stay by Hijikata’s side with unclouded eyes. Even he acknowledges later that her smile practically saved him when he thought times were hopeless. She became a support he was looking for outside of the Shinsengumi. For once, he begins to falter when he realizes these feelings. He became afraid to die because that means he would be leaving a woman who he loves so dearly, and he couldn’t bear it. Hijikata admits, “You gave me a reason to live when I had closed my heart.” And because of her giving Hijikata another reason to live he promised he wouldn’t die and leave her alone. Like a samurai, he won’t deviate from that decision.
Despite being a demon, Hijikata has many intricate layers to himself as a person. Even if he’s labeled as a ruthless murderer by outsiders considering the general Shinsengumi reputation, he carries many morals on his shoulders such as respect, loyalty, and honesty. He’s a brave samurai through and through, carrying himself with dignity, but even so he’s still human to the very core.
