One person is standing outside of a dojo -- you can hear the sounds of wood clacking together because a session is still going on. Another person, someone in his late teens walks up to the other who seems to be holding something in his hands.
"Toshi, you know I don't really drink."
"We earned this Kondou-san, let's relax."
Kondou hums in agreement because he knows he can't win over Hijikata almost all the time. They finally get seated outside of the Dojo, taking sips out of their cups every time sake was poured.
Hijikata's cup stops at his lips, and he mutters something, "I'm... Glad you allowed me to train here, despite being just a peasant."
"Hm..? You're talented, smart, you work very hard just like the other students -- so why should it matter that you're a peasant?" Kondou is practically the same anyway, so he definitely understands. Though, Hijikata just shakes his head then downs the sake pretty fast.
"Well, I already gave up on being a merchant. I haven't really accomplished much. Sometimes I wonder if I'll get to where I want to go, you know." He says this very flatly, but there's a hint of... Hope in his voice, as if he hasn't given up on something yet.
Kondou hums again and takes a sip of his own sake thoughtfully, "You quit because you didn't want to do it, right? What do you want to do, Toshi?"
There's a long pause.
"It might... Be kind of stupid."
"I wouldn't make fun of you, would I?"
Kondou has a point, actually. He never has, unless it was maybe how grumpy Hijikata looked all the time.
Another long pause, and Hijikata is downing another cup of sake. Then he finally speaks up, "I'll admit... When I was 11 years old, I planted a bamboo plant on my home. I made a wish...That I wanted to become a samurai, and maybe own a sword like the samurai do. I mean, if I become one I can't fight with my fencing equipment, can I?" A dry chuckle at that poor sarcasm, "But I mean, I want to be a true samurai though. The ones that have two swords around their waist. Is that stupid, I wonder? People always say I can't do it because I'm a peasant."
"Not at all. We actually share the same dream so... I think we can achieve it together, right?" Like always, Kondou's words are calm... But always encouraging and sincere.
Hijikata couldn't help but look down at his cup and smile.
"Yeah... It's not impossible, isn't it?" Especially if I'm right beside you... We can definitely do it.
